Building on the success of the original,
Mercedes-Benz has introduced an all new Vito
van. Under the streamlined bodyshell is a rear
wheel drive platform which offers improved
traction and passive safety over its front wheel
drive predecessor. Additional model
configurations are also available increasing the
Vito’s appeal to businesses. In the 109CDI
series, buyers have a choice of a standard or
long wheelbase van and crew cab, or a high
roof van. All versions are fitted with a 65kW
turbo diesel (a power increase of 8% over the
old model), and 6-speed manual transmission.
Pricing starts at $33,990 for the Compact 3-
door van tested, while the long wheelbase
version (an extra 230mm) is $2,600 more. As
expected with any vehicle carrying the three
pointed star the list of standard safety features
is extensive. It includes; ABS brakes (disc all-
round), with EBD and Brake Assist, driver’s
airbag, ASR (Acceleration Slip Control), and
ESP (Electronic Stability Program). While
power steering and windows are standard, air-
conditioning is a $2,650 option as is a
passenger’s airbag at $735.

to double as an office so you expect it to be
functional and comfortable. One of the Vito’s
best features is the ease of entry and exit. A

the van. The driver’s seat has a wide range of
adjustment, but its firm cushion doesn’t offer
much support. Adjustable for both tilt and
reach the steering wheel moves through a
broad arc which should make most drivers
